The purpose of the Delta Literacy Project is to help decrease the illiteracy rate among adults in the Chicago area. The project has a staff of volunteer tutors, the majority being members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Each tutor is certified and trained to teach adults “how to read”. They also teach math to students who desire it. Tutors and students meet twice a week for a free one-to-one tutoring session. Tutoring sessions are 1 1/2 hours and students are 18 years and older, who test below an 8.9 Reading Level. These students are given appropriate studies in reading math, English and spelling based on individual need. Tutoring is provided 1 on 1. The Delta Literacy Project is state funded and collaborates with other state and city adult literacy projects.
