Delta G.E.M.S.

“Growing and Empowering Myself Successfully”

DGem

Delta Gems was created as an expansion of the Delta Academy program. It goals are to “catch the dreams” of African American at-risk, adolescent girls aged 14-18. Delta GEMS provides the frame work to actualize those dreams through the performance of specific tasks that develop a “CAN DO” attitude. The goals for Delta GEMS are:

  • -To instill the need to excel academically;

  • -To provide tools that enable girls to sharpen and enhance their skills to achieve high levels of academic success;

  • -To assist girls in proper goal setting and planning for their futures – high school and beyond; and

  • -To create compassionate, caring, and community minded young women by actively involving them in service learning and community service opportunities

The Chicago Alumnae Delta GEMS (Growing and Empowering Myself Successfully) program works under the auspices the Educational Development Committee. The Delta GEMS (grades 9-12), participate in educational, cultural, social, and public service activities. Their meetings are held on the 3rd Sunday of every month at D’Estee.

During the Chicago Public Schools spring break, the Educational Development Committee/Del-Teen sponsors a Historically Black College Tour that is open to female and male high school students. The tour visits different black colleges and universities every year. In addition, Delta GEMS actively volunteer for community service projects. Past projects of the GEMS have included various drives for the homeless and giving activities for the less fortunate internationally.
