Sorority hosts a symposium on Sexual violence awareness for youth and adults.
CHICAGO — The Chicago Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. will host a symposium entitled “Deltas Bringing Chicago Together Safely: A Health Symposium for Teens and Adults on Domestic and Sexual Violence Awareness and Prevention” on Saturday, February 25, 2012, at Chicago State University, 4th Floor Library, from 10am until Noon. This symposium, in partnership with the Kappa Leadership Institute – Chicago, Chicago Foundation for Women, Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office, Office of Lt. Governor Sheila Simon, Wellspring Center for Hope and the YWCA of Metropolitan Chicago, is a combined effort to increase awareness and better define teen violence and identify dating violence. The event is free and open to people of all ages, male and female. There will be a reduced rate for parking.
February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month, and in keeping with Chicago Alumnae’s Domestic Violence Awareness Initiative and to highlight issues of domestic and sexual violence among teens, this symposium will provide information for teens and their guardians. There will be separate group sessions targeting boys, girls and adults. Immediate on-site assistance will be available. “Teen dating violence is a silent yet growing issue among our youth,” stated Chicago Alumnae’s president, Taliva A. Tillman. “As a service sorority committed to our communities and our youth, this important and crucial symposium is designed to provide the tools and supports to our youth; to address and then eradicate domestic and sexual violence in hopes that one day we can see an end to this horrific issue.”
